The lease between availability group '

$

Hello Friends,

We are facing this error all of sudden on SQL Server AlwaysOn Production Environment. Any thoughts on how this error will occur?

The lease between availability group 'AvailabilityGroup' and the Windows Server Failover Cluster has expired. A connectivity issue occurred between the instance of SQL Server and the Windows Server Failover Cluster. To determine whether the availability group is failing over correctly, check the corresponding availability group resource in the Windows Server Failover Cluster.

Thanks in advance.

Guna.

Can we setup FILESTREAM on Failover Cluster

I saw following point on Technet article about RBS.

The local FILESTREAM provider is supported only when it is used on local hard disk drives

or an attached Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) device.

You cannot use the local RBS FILESTREAM provider on remote storage devices such as network attached storage (NAS).

It looks like that we cannot use FILESTREAM on Failover Cluster because to setup Failover Cluster we need to have NAS. But then the NAS is made available locally for Failover Cluster so FILESTREAM should work right?

Found another article which talks about setting up FILESTREAM on Failover Cluster so I am a bit confused.

Log Shipping - encrypted? Resilience?

Hi,

A couple of questions about log shipping that I did not see covered in documentation; if they are covered somewhere I would be glad to be pointed to the existing relevant docs.  This would be (at least at first) using SQL Server 2008.

1) Is there any built-in mechanism for encryption of data transferred through the Log Shipping process, or would we have to use IPSec or similar transport-level strategies?

2) Does Log Shipping provide any resilience features to automatically recover from failures such as: network errors preventing transfer of data; database unavailability at the scheduled times for log application; temporary lack of disk space, etc.?

thanks!

Hi,

In my scenario I have scheduled a weekly Full backup and Differential backups on alternate days for my instance. A day before my scheduled full backup my instance crashed but luckily the differential backup was taken.

But I need help with restoring the FULL DB backup + the DIFFERENTIAL backup taken. The backup locations of the FULL and DIFFERENTIAL backups are in separate folders is that a problem???

AlwaysOn Cluster reboot due to file share witness unavailability

$

Hi Team,

Anyone came across this scenario in AlwaysOn Availability Group (two node), file share witness times out and RHS terminate and cause the cluster node to reboot. File share witness is for continuous failover and if the resource is unavailable my expectation was that it should go offline and should not impact Server or Sql Server. But its rebooting the cluster node to rectify the issue.

Configuration

Windows Server 2012 R2 (VMs)

Sql Server 2012 SP2

Errors

A component on the server did not respond in a timely fashion. This caused the cluster resource 'File Share Witness' (resource type 'File Share Witness', DLL 'clusres2.dll') to exceed its time-out threshold. As part of cluster health detection, recovery actions will be taken. The cluster will try to automatically recover by terminating and restarting the Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS) process that is running this resource. Verify that the underlying infrastructure (such as storage, networking, or services) that are associated with the resource are functioning correctly.

The cluster Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS) process was terminated and will be restarted. This is typically associated with cluster health detection and recovery of a resource. Refer to the System event log to determine which resource and resource DLL is causing the issue.

upgrade from standard to enterprise on a cluster.

SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard
Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard.
Two node Active/Passive Clustered, lets say NodeA is active and NodeB is passive.

Need to upgrade the edition only from standard to enterprise.

Want to understand if we need to apply the upgrade manually on both the nodes one by one
or Only we apply the upgrade only on the passive node and it will get applied to the active node by itself once we failover to the passive node. Lets say we first run the upgrade from the passive node NodeB and after the setup completes, we manually fail-over from NodeA to NodeB. Once we fail-over, SQL Server will automatically apply the upgrade on the NodeA which is passive now. Any step by step documentation will be helpful.

Thankyou.

Backup DB's on High Availability issue

I have an issue with backing up the DB's from cluster server that have 2 nodes on him.

I have a Cluster server with High Availability (for Active/Active cluster) and I trying to take a full backup from him but it says that :

The selected backup type is not supported on a "Always on secondary replica"...

And sending me to Microsoft webpage : http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=208213

Active Secondary's: Backup on Secondary Replicas.

All I want to do is to backup the primary node with Full Backup type on nightly basis and shrink the log file . (without un-synchronizing every day)

Thank you

Has anyone successfully installed a SQL Server 2012 Failover Cluster on Server 2012? I'm getting stuck at the Instance Configuration screen, i get an error when trying to detect the SQL Server Network Name, here is the error:

The given network name is unusable because there was a failure trying to determine if the network name is valid for use by the clustered SQL instance due to the following error: 'The network address is invalid.'

i am using oracle virtual boxes. previously i used vmware on the same machine for SQL 2008 and windows 2008 with out any issues.

my cluster tests are passed with out any issues. is there any one out there have same issue. does any one have solution.

Always on-Cluster service on primary node was down- Failed to bring secondary node as primary

Errors from node 2 (Secondary replica)

Cluster node XYZ was removed from the active failover cluster membership. The Cluster service on this node may have stopped. This could also be due to the node having lost communication with other active nodes in the failover cluster.

Cluster resource 'xyz_AG' of type 'SQL Server Availability Group' in clustered role 'xyz_AG' failed.

SQL Cross Site High Availability - Configuration

$

Hi All, after testing my SQL DR Failover at the weekend I ran into an issue. The configuration is as follows:

3 Physical SQL Servers in a cluster.

Main Site: 2 x Servers with DAS. Including the quorum disk.

DR Site: 1 x Server with own DAS. (This does appear to have its own Quorum drive, but with nothing in there)

They are setup in HA (Async while live). The issue i had was that while testing fail over i could move the active DB server just fine. But when i turned off the two production servers on the main site (Including storage), the cluster service on DR shut down and we lost the DB. I did just turn this back on and restored connectivity, but does anyone have any ideas on why this happened?

I'm guessing it has lost quorum and so shutdown the cluster, is my configuration wrong? I inherited this setup so it may well be incorrect. I thought all nodes should be able to take ownership of the same quorum disk. Thanks, Carl.

Windows Cluster Setup for Always On

I am in the process of setting up always on. We have two VM machines hosted in different locations. One would be primary and the other would be DR.

I had procured one IP for windows cluster and had created the cluster with the two nodes. Now is the part where i need to setup quorum. since it is two node, should i choose node majority and file share for witness?

We do not have shared storage. Also if file share is chosen, does it have to be in a different server?

Requesting your inputs and suggestions to proceed further.

Does SQL Server AlwaysOn use the network settings of the WSFC?

$

Hopefully, this is an easy question. I know that AlwaysOn creates a WSFC role in order to provide failover of the Availability Group Listener. But does it also "honor" the WSFC network setttings? What I'd like to do is isolate the client-side traffic from the database replication traffic. But it's not clear to me that AlwaysOn even uses that part of WSFC. Can someone please let me know:

a) Can you totally isolate the traffic as I've described?

b) Does AlwaysON actually use WSFC network settings? If yes, then I guess I cannot do what I want, since my choices are Cluster & Client, or Cluster Only.

Many thanks,

Bill
