SQL Server AlwaysON cannot failover if you changed default port number

$

Hello,

I have installed 3 nodes SQL Server 2016 with AlwaysON (2 nodes for HA- in same Location + 1 node for DR- in different Location)

I have changed SQL Servers' s default port number (different than 1433). When I want to failover to secondary Availability Groups, I cannot. Because on the Failover screen, SSMS would like to connect to Secondary node using default port number and it can not allow to change port number like "ipadress, portnumber". Due to it cannot connect to secondary node, I cannot failover to secondary.

Is it a bug or can i have some wrong settings?

Thank you!

AG still in MS Failover Clustering but not in SSMS

Hi,

I've got a problem that's a lot bigger then my knowledge so I hope someone can help me.  We had to restore a server pair within an always-on cluster.  When we brought up the servers, we saw that the Availability Groups were not listing in SQL Server Management Studio, but the listener seemed to still be working.  We looked in the MS cluster manager and saw that the AG was still listed and it had its resources attached.  It was on, green and running.

So I'm curious how the listener is still working, and is it possible to create a new AG within ssms and have it point to the cluster resource?

Thanks for any help.

Cannot enable CDC on an SQL Server database which part of an Availability Group

Hello,

I am running SQL 2016 13.0.5201.2 (Enterprise) On Windows Server 2016 Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.2551).

I am trying to enable CDC on a database which is part of an Availability Group. I ran the following command using a login which is a sysadmin:

USE XXX

GO

EXEC

sys.sp_cdc_enable_db;

GO

I get this error message:

Msg 22830, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_cdc_enable_db_internal, Line 193 [Batch Start Line 6]

Could not update the metadata that indicates database XXX is enabled for Change Data Capture. The failure occurred when executing the command '(null)'. The error returned was 3933: 'Cannot promote the transaction to a distributed transaction because there is an active save point in this transaction.'. Use the action and error to determine the cause of the failure and resubmit the request.

What should I be doing to resolve this? Thanks.

SQL 2016 SP1 AlwaysOn DBCC CHECKDB on non-readable secondary

We have an AlwaysOn setup with async commit and readable secondary = No.

CheckDB maintenance plan is failing with following error message:

"The target database, 'XXXX', is participating in an availability group and is currently not accessible for queries. Either data movement is suspended or the availability replica is not enabled for read access. To allow read-only access to this and other databases in the availability group, enable read access to one or more secondary availability replicas in the group.  For more information, see the ALTER AVAILABILITY GROUP statement in SQL Server Books Online."

SQL Server version is 2016 SP1 (13.0.4001.0).

Can anyone please help me on this?

At Always On, failover cluster services communicates and Servers comminucates for data transfering.

What is best network practises for both sides?

1) How to make cluster services communication network redundant?

2) How to make Sql Server data communication network redundant?

Extend on-prem AlwaysON AG to Azure

Hello all!

I am looking forward to get some guidance on how to extend my on-prem AO AG into Azure for the purpose of DR.

How do the steps usually go? I am using Azure ASR to failover to Azure and failback to on-prem.

My questions are -

1. When I want to "test failover", how can I achieve to see whether my on-prem app can connect to the Azure replica, without affecting the daily operations?

2. Will the copy on Azure be Synchronous or asynchronous? Can we use a sync copy if we're failing over through an Express Route (low latency)?

3. Will the replica automatically start replicating to my primary AG once it is up on prem? Is this affected by whether the Azure copy is sync or async?

I only have a basic understanding of SQL, so a feedback is much appreciated!

Cheers

Hi,

I have configured log shipping and it restores all the log files upto a particular time after which it throws error and not in consistent sate. I tried deleting and again configuring log shipping couple of times but no success. Can any one tell me  how to prevent it as I have already configured log shipping from another server to same destination server and it is working fine for more than 1 year? The new configuration is only throwing errors in restoration job.

Thanks,

Preetha

Hi All,

I found lots of information re AlwaysOn Availability group in errorlog, so complain from end user yet, although those are information only, but I don't see why the database is trying to change roles so often?

Full and differential backups on SQL AAG

$

Hi All,

Need some information regarding Full and Differential backup on 2 node SQL AAG. My doubt is, if full and diff backups are done on different nodes would we be able to apply the diff backups to full backup (from different nodes).

We are planning to have below setup:

  • 2 Node SQL 2016 AAG- Lets says Node A & Node B
  • Full & Differential backups to a network share on primary (sys.fn_hadr_is_primary_replica)
  • Full Backup - Sunday
  • Differential Backup -  Monday to Saturday
  • Transactional Log Backup - Hourly

Let's say if full and diff backups are done as below
    Node A - Primary
  • Sunday - Full backup on Node A
  • Monday - Diff backup on Node A

  • Failover on Tuesday

    Node B - Primary
  • Tuesday - Diff backup on Node B
  • Wednesday - Diff backup on Node B

    Can we restore ...
Full backup from Sunday (taken on Node A when it was primary)
    with the Diff backup from Tuesday (taken on Node B - which was <g class="gr_ gr_1380 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" data-gr-id="1380" id="1380">primary</g> node on Tuesday)?

i.e. are we able to restore Sunday's full backup with Monday's diff backup as they are done on different nodes?

Could you please point to any link (if there is) to documentation with this information?

Thanks for the information.

Hello,

I have the following configuration:

2 Windows 2016 datacenter

- Windows failover cluster created and configured with a share withness

- Installation sql 2016 Datacenter

The next step is to enable high availability but when i go to the high availability tab of the sql service within the sql Server  configuration manager application im unable to select anything. On the screen the error message

An error occured while loading the AlwaysOn High Availability properties [return code: 0x80070002].

i have followed the procedure from the website https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/36143.sql-server-2016-step-by-step-creating-alwayson-availability-group.aspx

the validation test only reports a warning about the network adapters not being redundant.

I have tried this with the sql service account, domain admin account and local administrator account.

Any help would be much appreciated.

with kind regards,

Ruud

SQL Server Always on backup check

Is there is a way to check backup status on databases configured on Alwayson. Currently i have to check on all replicas to check the status of the database backup. Is there is any simple way/script to check the last backup status from only one replica/Server? It would be great helpful if some one can answer with some scripts.

Thanks in advance.

DBCC CHECKDB weird issue

$

hi folks:

I have a SCCM database and it contains corruption. The best way is to restore to the last known good backup but we have

to fix the db this time.

What I did is to convert db into single mode and use REPAIR_REBUILD to fix

alter database abc set single_user with rollback immediate...

dbcc checkdb ('abc', REPAIR_REBUILD)

however, after I've converted db into single mode and it ran with success. I opened another session in studio and

check sp_who to make sure but find a few sessions which are still connecting to this db.

what's more, these sp are all lower session (process < 50) , therefore, I can not kill these spid.

and they are all from TASK MANAGER.

This prevents me from executing dbcc checkdb as I can not get exclusive access to this db..

Any comments on why those system process connected to this db after singler_user mode is on?

thanks

Hui

Access SQL through Alwayson Listener

$

I have setup AlwaysOn in Azure Resource manager. The SQL and cluster setup appears OK. Have added several databases and synchronisation appears to be working fine. I can fail back and forth between the nodes. However I cannot connect via the listener name from any machine other than the primary node. I can ping the name and telnet on port 1433 from other servers, but I cannot connect with SSMS from the secondary node or make an data source connection from another machine in the same network. This is a single subnet setup.

I have checked the firewall rules are there for 1433 and 5022 as well as the probe port. I have tried turning the firewall off, but it still doesn't work. Does anyone have any other ideas
