Create SQL server cluster on existing SQL server

Dear All,

I have an urgent query that we are running SharePoint server 2013 on single server and installed SQL server 2012 on single server, our management decided that we need to configure failover cluster on existing SQL server. I want to confirm that it is possible that we can install failover clustering services on existing SQL server and then add an other server on SQL 2012 for high availability or do we need to first install failover cluster service and then install SQL server for failover clustering. Please guide as it is urgent.

Thanks.

HA Cluster Replicate to DR -- Best Solution (SQL 2012) ???

$

Hello,

We have an HA configuration with an Active-Passive Cluster / Shared Disk SAN which is working great.  I have been looking for how to replicate the information to our DR site.  We have many databases (some are more static vs. other transactional). I had some questions:

Would it make sense to configure a snapshot for the static databases?  Is that possible from a clustered environment using it as the publisher?

Would it make more sense to configure the clustered environment to use transactional replication?  Is it possible from a clustered primary?

Is log shipping too archaic?

Thanks in advance for your help!

AG periodic timeout disconnections

I have many AG on SQL 2012. I get this message a few times a day. It fix itself withing 60-120 seconds.

A connection timeout has occurred on a previously established connection to availability replica 'zzz' with id [6A004D27-B391-42BA-A3F7-BDC8EB570C4F]. Either a networking or a firewall issue exists or the availability replica has transitioned to the resolving role.

When this occurs there is no special error in the cluster and no other application (i.e. exchange) is reporting any communication error.

Recently I realized that it happens almost every day at 3:30 and 15:30 but I don't see anything special around that time (no heavy work neither high iops).

Where could I look for the cause of the disconnections?

Availability group is missing on one server.

Hello,

I have created 4 availability groups on a 4 nodes cluster. (Windows 2012\ SQL 2012EE) Everything is running fine for at least a year. It is the first cluster of total 12 clusters on this platform. They are all the same.

Today I discover that on one of the nodes a number of databases are restoring. I look further and when I check the status of the availability groups I notice that one availability group is gone. It is only missing on one server, on the other servers the availability group is running fine. On 3 servers SSMS shows me all 4 availability groups.

Failover cluster manager show that the availability group is still running fine on one of the nodes. No error message indicates that something is wrong with the cluster.

Do you have a suggestion how I can get the availability group back on the server the now shows 3 availability groups. Restarting the server does not solve the problem.

Lots of users are using the databases of this availability group. That makes it difficult to remove and recreate the availability group in a few minutes.

Best regards,

Erik

SQL Cluster

Hi,

I have a 4 node cluster the setup is as follows:

OS W3K R2 SP

SQL 2005 SP2

The cluster can be managed from the Cluster Administrator console, however how can I check or manage the cluster model (I want to check which type of cluster is running, local qorum, single (standard quorum, or majority node cluster?

Also if I want to remove two of the nodes from the cluster I have looked at the following KB -https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191545(v=sql.90).aspx which goes through a process of removing SQL from the server you want to take out of the cluster, however there is no mention of if you also need to evict the node from the Cluster Administrator console or does the SQL uninstall take care of this?

SQL Server Agent won't start in 2012 R2 Cluster

We have a two node SQL cluster that has been running for quite some time. We have 4 SQL instances running in the cluster. One day one of them stopped working. The SQL Server Resource is in the failed state and the SQL Server Agent is in the Offline State. The name, Analysis and storage are all Online.  We are unable to get the SQL Server Role to start. However, if you were to go into the services on either of the nodes and start the services manually, the run fine on the server (they run locally but still show up as failed in the cluster).  Tried rebooting both nodes to reset the cluster, checked logins, and a few other things. Logs aren't very helpful.  Any ideas?

Cluster Events:

Event ID 1069: Cluster resource 'SQL Server' of type 'SQL Server' in clustered role 'SQL Server (SQLCLOUD)' failed.

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

Event ID 1254: Clustered role 'SQL Server (SQLCLOUD)' has exceeded its failover threshold.  It has exhausted the configured number of failover attempts within the failover period of time allotted to it and will be left in a failed state.  No additional attempts will be made to bring the role online or fail it over to another node in the cluster.  Please check the events associated with the failure.  After the issues causing the failure are resolved the role can be brought online manually or the cluster may attempt to bring it online again after the restart delay period.

Event ID 1205: The Cluster service failed to bring clustered service or application 'SQL Server (SQLCLOUD)' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered service or application.

Always ON: How can we synch the logins in primary and secondary servers?

Hi,

For Always ON scenario, How can we synch  the logins/passwords in primary(Node1) to  secondary(NOde2) ?

Is there any script to run automatically synch the both logins/passwords?
I know , as standard MS script like sp_help_revlogin ( Transfer logins and passwords).  But, is there any other way, we can synch the logins/passwords in Always ON configured servers?

Thanks

SQL Server 2014 AlwaysOn Availability Group requirements

We are currently using a SQL Server 2008 Failover Cluster, running on a Win2008 WSFC with 2 nodes, with a shared SAN drive.

Now we are evaluating the possibility of switching to use an AlwaysOn Availability Group with 2 nodes.
1 primary replica for read-write, and 1 secondary replica for read-only.
SQL Server 2014 running on Win2012R2 WSFC should be used.
We would like to know the hardware and network requirements for such setup.

I read some info about this:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/ff929171.aspx
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc645993.aspx
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff878487.aspx

And below are my understanding. Can anyone correct me if I am wrong, and enlighten me on the points that I still don't know?

If there are any other requirements or constraints,  I would also like to know.

SQL Server 2014 Edition?
Enterprise Edition only.

Witness server? Or any 3rd server other than the 2 nodes?

Not required.

Shared storage (SAN, network drive, any kind of shared storage)?

Not required.

Quorum drive? (In our existing Win2008 WSFC, the shared SAN drive contains a volume specifically for quorum. Is this still required in Win2012R2 WSFC?)

??

Dedicated network card for heartbeat?

Recommended

Dedicated private network for heartbeat?
??

LAN network speed between the nodes? (1Gb? 10Gb?)
??

Sql Server Backup and Restores using Windows Server Backup

$

Hello,

A question was asked some time ago which did not receive an answer.

I understand that SQL 2008 R2 is supported by Windows Server Backup WSB. There are various references to SQL in Ms WSB documentation. I assume that an application level recovery of SQL databases is required with WSB the same as any other SQL backup recovery with other third party backup applications.

After successful backups of a SQL server the applications option in the recovery wizard is greyed out in WSB. I have followed the backup procedures set out inhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725726.aspx and the technote of how to register an application's VSS writer in WSB in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc307260(VS.85).aspx I have also compared this with the registry entries on a working Exchange server using WSB on the same site to make sure the procedure is basically sound.

It doesn't work, I obtained the SQL VSS Writer details from the output of VSSadmin list writers cmd and have entered the details correctly as far as I can see and comparing them with the same settings on the Exchange Server.

Please advise, any assistance appreciated.

I have a very similar issue. Windows Server Backup has taken a VSS full backup of the server and yet the option to restore application is greyed out in Windows Server Backup and while there is a backup copy showing in restore in SSMS I get an error when trying to restore it.

Please can anyone help.

Hello,

I like to have an image with Windows 2012 R2 and SQL Server 2012 installed and apply it to 2 VMs.  Will SQL Server work?  What do I need to do to SQL Server to make it work normally on these 2 VM?

Thanks,

AlwaysOn - changing log file growth setting

$

Hi

I was looking to change the file growth setting in our AlwaysOn environment databases.

We have a single availability group, one primary and one secondary replica. I learned that when changing the file growth setting on the primary databases (data file), the change flows though to the database on the secondary replica. Very cool.

However after doing the same with the log files, the file growth setting changed on the primary but the change did NOT propagate to the secondary.

Please would someone kindly explain this behavior? Ideally if there is some documentation of this that would be great to read. I've tried to find in BOL without success. Not sure what to search for!

Is the solution to apply the change directly to the secondary?

thank you for your help in advance.

kindest regards

Paul

p.s - here's the T-SQL code I used:

ALTER DATABASE myDB
MODIFY FILE ( NAME = N'myDB_log', FILEGROWTH = 512MB );
GO

Production/DR server synchronization

$

How can I keep a production SQL server and DR SQL server in sync? I'm not referring to data - I can use SAN replication for that.  I'm referring to the many configuration settings and objects that are external to the databases:

  • Server settings (xp_cmdshell, etc.)
  • Logins
  • Server- and database-level roles
  • Server- and database-level permissions
  • Object level permissions
  • Maintenance plans/SSIS packages
  • SQL Agent jobs
  • Job schedules
  • Database mail configuration
  • Objects (proxies, alerts, credentials, operators)
  • Linked servers
  • Scheduled tasks
  • ODBC connections

I realize that many of these items can be scripted out, and periodically run on the DR server; but not all of them can be.  And some, although they can be scripted, may be problematic to restore on a DR server, such as SQL Agent jobs.  And even with backup scripts, it seems like developing a process to refresh a DR server would be overwhelming given the number of elements and exceptions.  I'm not adverse to doing the work to create a completely scripted solution, but was curious if one already exists that handles all or most of the elements in my list.

By the way, I use SQL Server 2008 R2.

Thanks!

alwayson log queue - async problem!

Hi guys,

I have some doubts with alwayson (async mode)… It happened many times that I see in the dashboard the green tick and everything looks perfect… But primary and (async) secondary is way far delayed…

Is there a way to measure that? I am trying to find the value of such queue…

I want to monitor how much statements are piling up in the async secondary.

Any input will be appreciated!

Thanks!!
