Allowing databases to be put back into standby mode if not changes have occured

We have a large compressed Prod backup file over 40GB.  We refresh our other environments on a regular basis.  It takes over 8 hours to copy.  Would like to use logshipping to keep a copy of prod on our secondary.  We would like to make a copy of the secondary database that can be used by our testers.  Then set the secondary backup to standby mode and continue with log restores.  As long as the secondary has not changed I see no reason why this could not be available.  Problem is when you set the secondary DB status to Recovery you can not set it back to standby mode and start applying log restores even if nothing has changed other than the status.
