Per Core Licensing

Hey,

We're in a bit of a mess at the moment. We're trying to understand the Per Core Model but I can't see aything, anywhere, about multiple SQL instances on 1 VM.

Basically, we have 1 virtual machine running SQL Server Standard, which has 4 v-cores assigned to it in the VM settings (Settings > Hardware > Processor > 4 virtual processors).

Now we're running 4 named instances of SQL on this one machine. We need to up it to 5 named instances, hence looking at our licensing requirements.

I do not understand if we need the minimum of 4 to cover the VM, or if we need the minimum of 4 per instance of SQL; so 5 instances x 4 licenses = 20 core licenses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It must be the former, surely, otherwise what's the point of being able to assign processors to each SQL instance; no point in giving a SQL instance access to 2 processors if you have to license it for 4.

Clarification greatly appreciated.

Thanks
