Physical - Virtual combination

Hello,

We want to implement an Always On solution with a primary Physical server and a secondary Virtual server.

2 questions:

1. Is this supported? I don't see why this wouldn't work but I haven't found any white paper which tells me this will work.
2. What does Microsoft say about Virtual SQL servers compared to Physical servers. In almost all blogs I read Physical > Virtual because of performance issues but has this been confirmed by Microsoft somewhere?
