delete data from a read only partition

Hi,

our database is partitioned and data older than 12 months goes into a read only partition by the DBA. However, i now have a requirement to start deleting data, will probably be older than 7 years. What's the most effective way to get rid of this data,  I would ideally prefer to drop partitions but i don't think i can, as i am deleting old data based on date butalso for specific clients, so 1 client may need 10 years worth of data, another 7. Therefore, looks like a delete statement rather than deleting partitions.

Is there an effective and quick way to do get rid of old data from read only partitions? Still using SQL Server 2008 but moving to 2016 at the end of the 2020, if makes any difference. Thank you.

Panos
