Database Corruption from a down SAN????

Hi guys!

I was talking to one of the other DBA's today and we were talking about one of his systems.  He has two physical machines which he clustered and the data and log files reside on a SAN.

He mentioned to me that the network was going to go down for some kind of upgrade, so he needed to bring down the cluster, or else the databases might get corrupted.  I've never heard of anything like that happening before, is there any truth in this, and why?
