AlwaysOn Availability Groups - Can we have just Primary replica?

Hi all,

We are looking at a future deployment of this technology in SQL 2012 for Production. Would sit on a 2-site WSFC.

The question has come up: is it feasible to create a 'single-node' copy of such a deployment, based on a single-node WSFC at the first site. We would have SQL 2012 instances installed on this one server, still have the AAG in place but have no other instance to host secondary replicas?

Reason being to get to a 'Pre-Prod' build that simulates as close as possible to Prod but is not a full WSFC and does not have full AAG on top.

From reading, my thinking is you need 1 or more genuine secondary replicas in the AAG by definition. Can anyone confirm or comment?

Many thanks

PD
